Quadratos Cross for Good Friday

The Good Friday service at Wembley Downs featured meditations on two crosses – the one on which Jesus died and the one that he calls us to carry daily : ” ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me .. .” (NRSV Luke 9:23).

Both are intrinsic to the story of human redemption.

While the former is well contemplated on such a day as this, the latter is less understood, but immediately recognised in each pilgrim’s journey.

Good Friday Quadratos CrossUsing Alexander Shaia’s Quadratos approach, seen at length in Heart and Mind: The Four-Gospel Journey for Radical Transformation, today’s congregation symbolically engaged the four phases of disciple cross-bearing …

  • They placed fallen leaves around an equal-armed cross to mark the journey of change and transformation to which the Way of Christ calls us.
  • Confronting pain and suffering was so marked by also placing stones around the cross.
  • Sharing the bread and wine of communion on this day reminds us of our deep bonding in union with Christ.
  • A basin and towel with the washing of each other’s hands described the pathways of mature service to friend and stranger alike.

Each member of the congregation had opportunities to engage at a deeply personal level, not only with the meaning of the surrendered life of Jesus at Calvary, but the integration of that life into the daily business of engaging change, pain, union and service in Christ’s name.
