Domestic Violence in the Church

The Church of Christ Wembley Downs has expressed abhorrence of domestic violence in the community and has from time to time campaigned to raise awareness. As the spotlight falls this week on different expressions of the Australian church, this church’s leaders say there is absolutely no defence – theologically, pastorally, or biblically – for its support or perpetuation. We call to account its perpetrators and offer support and nurture to its victims and survivors.

  1. Thank you Dennis. At 71, I’ve been horrified this week to realise that the complementarisn view of relationships is STILL being argued for by the conservative churches. I really thought that had been put to bed in the 1970s. No surprises that we are are finding domestic violence amongst certain church populations.i At iits core it promotes a demeaning and thus covertly aggressive attitude towards women.

    • I’m a millennial, complementarianism is all I’ve ever known. It’s been promoted heavily by the Council of Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, Acts 29, 9 Marks, The Gospel Coalition, Together For the Gospel, and is even in movies like War Room, Fire Proof, Courageous – in the church that I’ve known, not being a complementarian means you might as well be not be Christian for all the good it’ll do you.

  2. Thank you, Jamie, for sharing your perspective. This church calls on complementarians and all others to stand against domestic violence in all its forms.

  3. Wonderful that there’s a clear statement. This is really important!
